Democratic Communication
We believe that people learn best when everyone is able to lead, participate, and question. However, this is only possible when learners trust enough to take risks. We believe that schools have a unique opportunity to guide learners to develop their voice, emotional intelligence, and sense of agency as individuals living in community, in a particular historical context. This is why GLCC helps to build learning communities that motivate learners in a culturally relevant environment that puts them at the center of their education.
Systemic Assessment
We believe that learning is more than memorization of abstract information. Experiential: We believe that powerful learning occurs when people connect new information with what they already know. This works best when everyone is able to engage with information and processes that are both relevant and expansive. It’s only when people are able to make relevant connections and then receive timely specific feedback from masterful guides, that they are able to apply what they have learned to their daily lives. This is why GLCC helps to build communities in which learners are responsible for explaining their learning, incorporating feedback, and connecting what they have learned to both individual and community goals.
Continuous Re-Orientation
We believe that change doesn’t happen overnight. A constructivist learning community is constantly evolving to fit the changing needs of the learners. In order to keep up, GLCC helps members of the community continuously re-orient themselves to constructivist practices. This not only helps to keep the student at the center of the learning process, but also keeps the rest of the community actively involved.
Community Connections
We believe that learning goes beyond the classroom. In fact, it may not happen in a classroom at all. We believe that constructivist learning goes beyond the learner. It allows the wisdom of the entire community to grow by connecting the education of the learners with the experience of community-oriented neighborhoods, businesses, and organizations. GLCC helps learning communities establish and maintain these connections.
